Show of hands: Who had an online boyfriend?

Or girlfriend, for that matter…

ME! I DID!

I will tell you, without reservation, that I did have a number of online boyfriends in my day. I was 11 or so. Is that too young for chat rooms? Keep in mind this was during a time when real adolescents logged in to chat rooms because they were new and cool. It wasn’t just 40 year old’s pretending to be 13/M/FL like now a’days. At least, I don’t think it was…

Usually kids my age who had online insignificant others had them because they were nerdy and weird and smelled too bad to have actual friends. Not me. Nope. I had them because I was bored out of my mind and it was Summer Break so I could stay up until an ungodly hour of the morning and chat in Yahoo! chat rooms and print out pictures of Sailor Moon characters to cover my headboard with. Which is…totally not a nerdy thing to do.

I imagined that my online boyfriends were probably equally cool 12 year old hotties. They probably looked a lot like Brad Renfro in Tom & Huck or Andrew Keegan in Camp Nowhere and certainly not like Andy Milonakis in a dark basement. Surrounded by Dragon Ball Z print outs. Certainly not.

Convos with online boyfriends usually went like this:

jhm1986: HYE

xohollyhox: hi.

jhm1986: What did you do today?????

xohollyhox: went to the pool. U?

jhm1986: waited for you to sign on.

xohollyhox: we should break up. g2g.

My online boyfriends made me feel special while simultaneously making me feel awkward and uncomfortable. Not unlike most every person I’ve dated since then.
